Layla learning to make cupcakes!
Nazly, Wardella (with her brownies), Amina, and Marjorie
Yesterday was a fun-filled day of baking! After months of re-arranging schedules, my friends Marjorie, Wardella, Nazly, all came to the home of Ms. Amina Farah (wife of the Ambassador of Djibouti) for a demo on classic Middle Eastern Ramadan desserts. When Amina mentioned to me wanting to learn how to make traditional Arab deserts, I decided on the menu of baklava, basboosa, k'nafeh. After learning that her 10 year old niece Layla's favorite color was pink, I added in my Butterfly cupcakes for good measure. Wardella, (a chemist by trade) happens to make the most fabulous brownies I've ever tasted, so she agreed to teach us to make those.
The best part of getting together was the chance for us all to get to know one another a little bit more. As the scents of chocolate, oranges, almonds, and vanilla wafted through the air, we laughed, joked, and told stories. It's funny how a few simple recipes can spark up nostalgia!
