DIY Middle Eastern Picnic: 7 Recipes

Olives & EVOO from Arianna Trading Co.
Stealing a few quiet moments from our busy modern schedules to enjoy a mouthwatering meal with family and friends is a luxury that many of us can't get enough of. To me, spending those moments outdoors makes the quality time even more special. My favorite picnic spots in the world have always been the site of Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli, just outside of Rome and in the archeological area at Capo Colonna in Crotone, Italy as well as at the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC during Cherry Blossom Season.

During my time in the Middle East, I discovered that picnics are a favorite pastime among the locals. One of the most beautiful sites I have ever seen is the Corniche in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Friday nights. Since the weather is too hot to enjoy outdoor meals in the daytime, families would set up their braziers and blankets (often Persian carpets) along the red sea. Sounds of music and scents of cardamom coffee filled the air, as did a happy, lighthearted energy.  Inspired by these cherished memories, I'm sharing recipes from my Middle Eastern Picnic cooking classes for National Picnic Month. May you and those you share them with enjoy them "with pleasure and health" as they say in Arabic.
